This is a game to simulate timing the stock market.
The game will randomly select one day between July 1, 2002 and Jun 30, 2019. Then you'll see the historical daily close prices for the S&P 500 and the WSJ headlines from that day. (You can click the links, but a WSJ subscription is required to read the full article.)
Use that information to decide what you want to with your money. Your options are to invest in the S&P 500 (stay invested), sell your shares in the stock market to hold on to cash (Hold cash), or to use all your money to short the S&P 500 (Short the market).
If you wanted to time the market in real life, you'd have to make this decision every 10 days forever. To get the most out of this game, try to do at least 20 guesses. In the game, you might be able to beat a buy-and-hold strategy in the short term, but most investors can't do it over multiple tries.
From your choice, you'll stay invested for 10 days and then you'll see your returns. To simplify the game, there are no trading fees, no interest rate with cash, and trades occur at daily close based on Yahoo! finance historical data.
This game is not investment advice. All investment decisions including buy-and-hold and timing the market involve risk. You should not use the results of this game to make investment decisions, it is for illustrative purposes only.
